The Greek Goddess Alcyone, also said "Halcyone," is the Goddess of the Sea, the Moon, Calm, and Tranquility, was symbolised by the kingfisher. Her feast day marks the beginning of the halcyon days, seven before and seven after the Winter Solstice. In ancient Greece, these were the days when the sea was smooth, a time of peace when the kingfisher could hatch her egg.
